My role in motion is often to lead the work from idea through delivery, figuring out what the piece needed creatively and then tactically to get it made, often with limited budgets and tight timelines. That could mean developing the concept from script to storyboard, setting the visual direction and pacing, hiring and coordinating voiceover talent or outside production, or staying hands-on through editing, animation and final delivery.
The balance changed with each project. For The Test Set, I helped bring the idea to life, developed the title design, and stayed closely involved through production and editing of the first episodes before handing the system off to outside editors and overseeing production from there. For Zashi, that meant storyboarding the script and establishing the look, feel and pacing before handing production to the motion team. For manifesto-style pieces, including Posit and the DB Revolution and the Zcash homepage manifesto, I stayed closely involved from concept through final production, shaping the story through voiceover, sourced footage, motion, music, editing and delivery.
Sometimes I was the producer and art director. Sometimes I was deep in the timeline. My role was whatever the work needed to get from an idea to a finished piece.
